Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour le Mérite "Fusee-and-chain transmission" Platinum Grande Complication with a Unique Pivoting Dial Segment, Mechaincal Caliber L072.1 Manual Wind Movement, Skeleton Back, Hand-Stitched Black Crocodile Strap with Platinum Fold-Over Deployant Buckle, 41.9mm Boutique Limited Edition of Only 100 Pieces You don’t need to be a Lange fan to realize that the A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour le Mérite "Fusee-and-chain transmission" 18kt White Gold Grande Complication Boutique Limited Edition exudes quality and craftsmanship. The three-part regulator dial of the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” was inspired by a precision chronometer crafted by Dresden master watchmaker Johann Heinrich Seyffert. An inimitable feature of this timepiece is the aperture in the subsidiary-seconds dial through which the tourbillon can be observed. With a fusée-and-chain transmission and a one-minute tourbillon, the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” incorporates two of the most effective complications that increase rate accuracy. Its third complication is the patented stop-seconds mechanism. Thanks to this device, the tourbillon – and with it the entire movement – can be stopped and restarted to one-second accuracy. Apertures in the three-quarter plate expose the fusée-and-chain transmission, which is so complex that it is rarely implemented in wristwatches. The owner can observe how the intricate 636-part chain unwinds from the mainspring barrel onto the fusée while the watch is being wound. The fusée-and-chain transmission is one of the most effective complications when it comes to increasing the rate accuracy of a mechanical watch. It is one of the tenets of physics that the power generated by a spring is high when it is fully tensioned and significantly weaker as it nears the fully unwound state. This can cause rate-accuracy fluctuations. The fusée-and-chain transmission works like an infinitely variable gearbox. It equalizes the waning force of the gradually relaxing mainspring and makes sure that the movement always receives a constant amount of energy. A. Lange & Sohne makes such a nice watch. Every detail of a Lange & Sohne watch is perfect. The movements are true works of art and, of course, of the highest mechanical and horologic quality. The cases have perfect, clean lines free of any superfluous embellishments. I am a big Lange fan and owning one of their watches will make anyone a Lange devotee. Fit & finish on this watch is of the highest quality. The RICHARD LANGE embodies the tradition of A. Lange & Söhne’s scientific observation watches from the 19th and 20th centuries. All facets of this timepiece are dictated by two goals: superior precision and the utmost in legibility. The RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” is an extra ordinary horological complication watch that unites A. Lange & Söhne’s unique fusée-and-chain transmission and a one-minute tourbillon with a patented stop-seconds mechanism. This timepiece is being offered in a Platinum Limited Edition version. Since the presentation of its first new-era watch collection 20 years ago, A. Lange & Söhne has introduced four extraordinary complications with the distinctive “Pour le Mérite” hallmark. What they all have in common is the fusée-and-chain transmission that Lange perfected for the wristwatch format. It assures that the movement is powered by a constant torque throughout its entire power-reserve period. Additionally, the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” features a one-minute tourbillon for best rate stability. Its stop-seconds mechanism makes it possible to instantaneously block the balance inside the tourbillon cage and thus stop the movement simply by pulling the crown. This allows the watch to be set to one-second accuracy. Additionally, the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” is endowed with an innovative and also patented pivoting dial segment: from 6 to 12 o’clock, a small auxiliary dial fills the gap in the hour circle, which at all other times exposes the fascinating tourbillon. The regulator dial of the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” shows the time indications with separate displays. The large upper minute circle and the smaller subsidiary dials for the hours and seconds are centred in the corners of an isosceles triangle. This layout was inspired by Chronometer No. 93 crafted by Dresden watchmaker Johann Heinrich Seyffert (1751–1818). In the late 18th century, he ranked among the pioneers of precision watchmaking in Saxony. Alexander von Humboldt, the famous German natural scientist, was one of the individuals who held Seyffert’s timekeeping instruments in high esteem and relied on their remarkable rate accuracy during his expeditions. The special edition of the RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” is now being presented with a noble Platinum case. The time display with unique hands and hour markers in the minute circle assures excellent legibility on the argenté-coloured solid-silver dial as the background. "Fusee-and-chain transmission": In the Lange & Sohne fusee-and-chain mechanism, the flow of power between the mainspring barrel and the going train is established indirectly by a chain comprised of 636 parts, which create 212 links, which forms a chain 152mm long. One end of the chain is attached to the barrel drum and the other to the fusée. As the mainspring barrel unwinds, the chain wraps around it and reels off the fusée. When the mainspring is fully wound and thus exerts great force, the chain pulls at the smaller radius of the fusée where the leverage is smaller. As the springs tension diminishes, the chain pulls at the larger radius with the higher leverage. Thus, regardless of the state of wind of the mainspring, the same amount of torque is delivered to the escapement, resulting in improved rate accuracy. In the fusée -and-chain transmission mechanism, there is one situation when the cone rotates backward: as the mainspring is being wound. To prevent the watch from stopping while it is being wound, Lange's master watchmakers integrated a marvel of miniaturization inside the fusée. It is a tiny planetary gear train that assures uninterrupted delivery of power to the movement. Additionally, it is endowed with a pretensioning mechanism that allows the characteristics of the mainspring and of the fusée to be perfectly harmonized. Finally, the elaborate construction includes a device that blocks the winding mechanism just before the mainspring is fully wound and stops the movement just before it is fully unwound. The " fusée-and-chain transmission" is visible through a drop-shaped cutout in the 3/4 plate.
